Brian McCarthy is a writer and curator living in Brooklyn, NY, and Cambridge, Massachusetts. He has been involved with the experimental film and video community in New York City since 1999, having worked for experimental spaces such as Anthology Film Archives, the Filmmaker’s Coop, and EAI.
Brian recently co-organized an exhibition and series of talks at Columbia University’s Neiman Gallery entitled “FIAT – Experiments in Financial Semantics” in November of 2011, moderating conversations with Reinhold Martin, Brian Holmes, Jesal Kapadia, Maliha Safri, Ultra-red Collective member Robert Sember, and artist Renée Green. Earlier, he curated a four-part experimental film and video series which incorporated lecture and performance elements at 16beaver group in New York City, exploring the intersections between political activism and experimental image-making practices. Recently he, along with Jesal Kapadia, conducted interviews with artists and urbanists in Mumbai, as well as participated in the AND AND AND platform (“Commoning in Kassel”) in Documenta 13.
